The Alphabet of Modern Training: E as Emotions

Someone once said, “we are emotional beings, striving to make rational decisions.” Well, one thing’s for sure: too often we underestimate the power of emotions and how much they affect our decision making. Even when we think we are making a decision in a completely logical and rational way…emotions are “always with us.”

We are human ❤️

For this exact reason, let’s move forward to learn more about the Training Alphabet, talking about the letter E.

E as Emotions.

If you’ve missed the first episode, you can find it here.

Emotions and brain-friendly learning

Emotions are a key ingredient for brain-friendly training. Whether it is a traditional classroom course or an e-learning course, the emotions we are able to arouse in our Learners determine the success and effectiveness of the training.

But…wait a minute. Why does our brain need this ingredient?

As we said in the beginning, we are human…with no emotions we struggle making decisions! By building emotional connections, we can create the perfect conditions to help our Learners to embrace new behaviors and habits, or to understand what to do in specific situations, or the reason why it’s important to learn a new skill, etc.

Afterall, isn’t this the goal of every trainer and Learning & Development Teams?

Let’s open a parenthesis:

Think about the power of the Like notification on every social network. Yep…if someone likes one of our Facebook posts, Instagram pic or story, Tiktok…our brain immediately receives a dose of dopamine, an incredibly powerful neurotransmitter (yes, it’s addictive!), which prompts us to repeat that action (a new post, or pic, or TikTok) with the aim and desire of having another emotional reward.

On the other hand, if one of our posts doesn’t get enough Likes…Good Heavens!

Half circle.

This brief excursus about the social networks universe really helps to highlight the significance of Emotions and how much they affect our actions and our decision making. In the “digital world”, too.

Basically, if we enjoy something, we want to do that again, we want more! By contrast, if we don’t like anything, our brain sends us a warning, screaming ”Hey, stop it!

Thereby, we can use emotions to our benefit to create a modern, effective, brain-friendly training!

The right mix of emotions

Which emotions do we have to “use”? The positive ones only?

Not necessarily. Depending on the situation, a bit of fear can be really helpful – since it can warn our Learners of risks and dangers they could face because of a certain behavior or decision.

Let’s take a training course on workers’ safety as an example.

The right mix of emotions is capable of ensuring the success of our training project focused on our employees’ health and safety.

Watch out!

If fear is overwhelming, it will reduce cognitive ability. Therefore, it is crucial that it is balanced and combined with an approach to help our Learners understand the “right decision to make” to avoid risk or danger.

Let’s go back to our example:

within a course about safety in workplaces, we could use a serious game/simulation, in which our Learners are trapped in a fire and the emergency door is blocked by an item on the other side of the door. A perfect scenario, with the right mix of emotions to strengthen in them the importance of always keeping emergency exits clear and removing any obstacles.

To sum up, we’ll help our Learners to immediately understand – in a “brain-friendly” way – the consequences caused by a blocked fire door.

In this specific case, we resorted to “fear of fire” as an emotional lever, but we provided our learners with an “escape method” from danger…which is to do the right thing: remove obstacles from emergency exits.

We added the right dose of dopamine, which will help us to achieve our goal: make Learners understand, both “emotionally” and “rationally”, the right behavior and the right decision to make.

Contents and User Experience: everything contributes to arousing the right emotions.

All contents, consciously and unconsciously, generate emotions. Text, images, audio, videos, colors.

Then, when designing our e-learning (and other) courses nel progettare i nostri corsi di formazione e-learning, we have to always remember the power of every graphic and multimedia element. It’s crucial to build the right User Experience, in the light of the emotions we want to recall. In short, Emotional Design!

Remember: E as Emotions. ❤️

Until the next letter of the Alphabet of Modern Training!
